Fix the room before buying a microphone

Choose the quietest space available. Close windows if outside noise is distracting, move away from fans, and soften reflective surfaces with curtains or furnishings. Listen to a test recording before deciding that new equipment is necessary.

Place your microphone close enough to capture your voice clearly without clipping. Use headphones during guest interviews to reduce the chance of speaker audio feeding back into the microphone.

Put the light in front of you

Face a window or place a soft light near your camera. A bright window behind you often makes your face appear dark. Check how the light changes at the actual time of your broadcast.

Keep the background tidy and separate yourself from it where possible. Avoid displaying private documents, personal addresses or screens with sensitive information.

Bring the camera to eye level

Raise your laptop or camera so you can look ahead comfortably. Keep your eyes near the upper part of the frame and leave a little space above your head. Check framing after you sit in your normal position.

If you share slides or demonstrate something on screen, test whether the text remains readable at the size viewers will see. Increase text size and hide unrelated windows.

Upgrade the weakest link

Review a test recording and identify the biggest distraction. Improve that one thing first. If the image is fine but speech is hard to understand, prioritize audio rather than buying a better camera.

Try a browser-based workflow.
